The trailer was finally towed to the farm two nights ago. At times it felt like the wind might roll us across the field while we slept, but we were in the same place when dawn came, so all was good.
Right off neighbours started to drop in to welcome us and offer any help we may need.
First along came Fergie. She was looking for her old and favorite play-mate, Otis.
Sadly Otis moved with his owners and poor Fergie, a brown and white Border Collie, was a tad confused and lost. She wasn't really sure what to make of us.
Then the folks to the West of us dropped in to say hello and let us know the garbage schedule. That's good...we were wondering about that. Being they are more "farmer" then we are (HA) we picked his brain a bit and warned him we'll do it again in the future. He seemed pretty fine about that. He noticed the old wood heater dumped on the scrap metal pile (just across from the growing dump pile) and wondered if he could take a piece his mother needed to replace on hers. But of course!
Neighbour to the East came by with cake, home-grown pears (that look ammmmmazing) her dog and a promise to bring her husband by at some point. She wanted us to meet Jake, the dog, so we knew to send him home should he show up. Last folks left bones around and dogs tended to gather for the hand-outs. She would prefer him to be where he belongs so we have her permission to "Shoo him with a broom" if necessary. He's such a lovely creature, we'll most likely end up walking him home instead. East neighbour also filled us in on some of the history of our house, saying her husband would fill us in even more. Sounds like quite the tales too! From ship captain to drug grower!! "That's why you'll see the helicopter's once in awhile, last guy grew stuff so they keep checking" OK, good to know!
Then the mother of both the East and West Neighbours stopped in to say "Welcome". Turns out we have McMillan's on all three sides. Being that each one seems friendly and wanting to help in anyway they can we feel blessed.
Another young-at-heart-gal, from "just past the bridge", flew up our drive tooting the horn a couple times. Hopped out, shouted a hello and welcome. Had a wee chat. And with her offer of "Anything you need, anything at all" was gone just as fast. (along with her phone number that got caught away by the wind, cause of course I remembered none of it!!) She did say something about wanting to bring cookies, but not being sure when she'd get around to it, thought she had better stop and not wait on the cookies! I assured her we would still be here and would be appreciative of cookies any time she did get around to them. :)
We were warned about the neighbour on the hill who lives in the trailer. No need to be in a hurry to meet him we were told. Oops. Too late. We meet him the day we helped move the last owner out, so we could move in. Guess from the sounds of it, he helped "farm" the contraband stuff. Probably supplied the young customers too. Great. :( Well, we did wonder about his painted toenails.
Anyways. We've been welcomed and from the looks of it won't have to live here for years and years before fitting in. I mean we were already invited to a Church Supper this coming Saturday by the East Neighbour (who'll be bringing the sweet-n-sour meatballs) to meet ALL the neighbours.
And, maybe if her directions (with flailing arms to boot, I soooo relate) were a tad more understandable, we just might go.
As it is, the wind was howling fierce again today reminding us that temperatures will soon not be conducive to short sleeves and flip-flops!
So, as the Ship's Captain (the home's first owner and builder) might be saying if he could....
It's time ye be batten down those hatches, there be time for Church Suppers at some later date!!!
Wow what friendly neighbours you have been blessed with. Take the time out for a Saturday Church supper. You have to eat and you have a good excuse to leave early! That way you don't have to cook and usually that is enough variety to please all of you. I so appreciate reading your blog!! I can just see that you will have that old place smiling and friendly in no time flat. Remember to take a break and enjoy each season as it comes! Hugs to you all!
